Life-changing whole house adaptation in Cardiff
16.07.24
Sometimes the need to Stairlifts and Homelifts comes unexpectedly.
One of our customers was married with a young child when he became quadriplegic after a workplace accident. Along with the emotional trauma, accidents that affect mobility also bring many practical challenges, like figuring out how to live comfortably and safely at home.

Re-modelling the property to support care in a wheelchair
We bought the new house to accommodate both our family and the care team supporting him. We made several adaptations to the property, ensuring the carer’s quarters are easily accessible from the main building. We added wider doorways and resin ramps for wheelchair access, along with vinyl flooring for better traction.
A therapy room was included to facilitate regular physiotherapy sessions. We also installed overhead hoists throughout the house for easier movement between rooms.
Every room underwent significant improvements, from planning to the final touches. After thoroughly testing the electrical system, we identified and fixed some issues and completed about 80% of a rewire, including new fuse boards.
Safety was a top priority, so we installed a hardwired smoke and fire alarm system throughout the house.
A Loxone smart home system with voice-controlled features
A smart home allows residents to control everything from an app or by using voice commands. In this house, the Loxone system manages lighting in each room, the electric front gate, the alarm system, heating and hot water, the sound system with ceiling speakers, and even the intercom.
This technology was essential for our customer, helping him maintain some control over his environment. Since he lost the ability to use his arms, being able to adjust things with his voice became incredibly important for his independence and comfort.
Keeping the home safe and warm
Our qualified gas engineer installed two new boilers, a hot water storage system, and a zoned heating circuit with individual radiators. This zoned heating system allows us to split the heating into different areas, using smart radiator thermostats and individual controls. As a result, everyone in the house can enjoy their space at the temperature that’s just right for them. This kind of adaptation is really important, especially in a home where multiple people are living together.

A home lift for freedom across all areas of the house
Without a home lift, our customer would have been limited to just one area of the house, missing out on family life. Installing a lift was the main reason Kelly reached out to us; she understood how essential it would be for their new life together.
We installed the Terry Harmony FE, the largest lift we offer, between the dressing room and a downstairs sitting room. Since our customer uses a heavy motorized wheelchair, this lift was the perfect choice.
We positioned the lift in the heart of the house to ensure he wouldn’t feel isolated from daily family activities. The location of mobility adaptations really impacts how a household functions, and it’s not uncommon for someone with a disability to feel separated if they can’t access key parts of the home.
Plus, we connected the lift to the Loxone smart home system, allowing our customer to control it through an app. This feature is crucial for helping him maintain a sense of independence.
A bathroom that’s relaxing and safe
The bathroom was designed to be fully accessible and features a smart bidet toilet and a spa bath. These changes transformed the space into a stylish, modern oasis for washing and relaxing. The hoist, bath, and toilet were all thoughtfully designed to ensure that carers can assist our customer in a way that is both safe and dignified.
Kelly said, “Lee was very professional from our first contact with him, to the completion of the work, he was extremely knowledgeable. There was a huge amount of preparation and research involved in the adaptations to our home which Lee was brilliant with. The work that was done in our home was completed to a very high standard. The smart home system which enables my husband to control the house using an app which is amazing. Our 5 year old daughter is always asking about ‘Lee the builder’ – we would highly recommend Adaptmyhome.”
We know that all our work is vital to the quality and comfort of our customer’s lives. Without careful planning and expert adaptation our customer could easily be trapped in one part of his house unable to participate in family life. At the end of this 6 month project, we felt proud to have helped to make a fantastic home for Richard.
